WHY DO EARTHQUAKES HAPPEN?
There are no easy answers to the big question we have on our hearts: "God, why did you allow this to happen?" |
A church member asked me about this a few days ago. I had to answer honestly, "I don't know."
I don't think anyone does. When I see the destruction in Haiti, I wonder about it too.
I do think that seeing tragedy can motivate us:
- to consider our own mortality
- to focus on the things that are most important
- to love and treasure our loved ones
- to use our limited time wisely
- to share what we have with the needy
- to be more viligant and prepared, physically, financially, spiritually
- to prepare ourselves to meet God
- to not take anything for granted
- to be proactive about sharing the Good News of Jesus
I wish I had an answer to the "why" questions of life - but sometimes I have to settle for less than an answer. I suppose, in the long view, having no answer doesn't mean we have no solution.
Jesus promised us a new world one day - one that is free from suffering, pain, fear and tears - and has enlisted us as kingdom workers who can "speed" that day forward (2 Peter 3:1-14). We have a solution for a world that is unstable and unreliable and unmerciful. We have Jesus - who can give the eternal promise of rest, life and purpose. We have confident hope that there is more to life than what we see, and that the most important part of us cannot be taken away. And for those of us who love and follow Jesus, we have confident hope that we will enter His kingdom one day soon, to enjoy the peace and plenty of a world untainted by sin.
2 Peter 3:9 says that God holds off the conclusion of this fallen world because he is patiently waiting for more people to repent. He could finish it today - but He doesn't. There must be more work for us to do.
